Hello, writers!

Thanks to so many who have sent cards and email expressions of sympathy. I so appreciate your support and prayers!

I want to make you aware of a couple upcoming opportunities. A great writing conference will be held May 2-3, 2009, at the Grapevine Convention Center, sponsored by the DFW Writers’ Workshop. It is not solely for the Christian market, but it will allow you to meet other writers, learn about publication, and schedule one-on-one appointments with literary agents (6 will be present). See for info on DFW Writers’ Workshop and for conference info.

Also, Joann sent an email about the Cup of Comfort Webinar, sponsored by Writers Digest. It will be Thursday, April 30th, at 1:00 pm, and will last 1-1/2 hrs. Cost is $49. See to signup.

Our next writers’ group meeting will be Wednesday, May 20th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in FSC room 3115 at First Baptist McKinney. Hope to see you all there!

So Much to Talk About! by Jodi Whisenhunt

First of all, the 1st ever Christian Writers’ Group Seminar is fast approaching!  Join us Sunday, March 29th, 4:00-8:00 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room of the FSC at First Baptist McKinney to hear presentations by Dana Bailey on time management, Joann Loughlin on grammar usage, Jodi Whisenhunt (me!) on publication, and Jan Winebrenner on inspiration and the call to write.   The seminar is FREE, but donations will be accepted.  Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.  Don’t miss it!

Secondly, we will have one more meeting before the seminar.  Please come  Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. to room 3115 of the FSC (our regular room – down the hallway beside the gym) for encouragement, information, and peer critique.

And finally, I attended a portion of a writers’ conference last week.  Unfortunately, my attendance time was cut short due to a sick hubby (he’s fine now), but I was able to glean valuable knowledge.  I listened very attentively as literary agent Chip MacGregor spoke about the world of publishing and non-fiction.  Did you know that despite a recession, this is actually prime time to be writing for the Christian market?  People need hope to get through uncertain times, and guess who can provide it?  We can!

I know several group members are working on books, but let’s not neglect the magazine market.  Many, many more readers pick up magazines than do books.  The average book sells maybe 5000 copies.  Established magazines have a readership of 100,000 or more.  Think about all the places you see magazines lying around – doctors’ offices, dentists’ offices, office reception areas – and how many non-subscribers pick them up throughout the day.  If God has placed a message on your heart, don’t feel the only route to express it is through a book!

The internet has created a vast need for content as well.  Blogs and mini-websites cover any and all topics, and many of them accept guest authors.  There’s often no money in it, but it’s good experience, good practice, and good exposure.  Learn to tell a story and tell it well, and people will eat up your material.

I’ll share more on publishing at the seminar, so bring your notebook & pen!

Keep writing for Him!

Heart of America Christian Writers Network Conference

HACWN offers a Mentoring Conference for April 16-18, 2009. This will be a chance for our writers to meet extensively with an editor who works in and acquires for the kind of book the writer seeks to publish. We will have at least six kinds of literature represented:

            Adult Fiction

            Adult Nonfiction

General Writing and Career – articles, devotionals, poetry, fillers, magazine writing, a mixed bag

Other genres may be available depending on interest.

We have the following editors to teach the different genres as follows:

Adult Fiction: Jeanette Windle — representing Kregel Publications and also her own work as a bestselling novelist, Jeanette will coach group members in crafting a novel they can be ready to submit to editors.

Adult Nonfiction: Nick Harrison, Senior Editor, Harvest House Publications. Nick has acquired numerous books for HH, has written his own books, and looks forward to working with his group to help them get their ms. ready to show to editors all over the world.

Magazine Writing and Career: Eric Reed, former VIce-President and Manager, Christianity Today Publications and Leadership Magazine, Eric is now a freelancer who can help group members get their mss. ready and also possibly help in submitting to CTI magazines.

Children’s Writing: Katara Patton, Editor, Tyndale House Publishing. Katara is the children’s acquisition editor at Tyndale and can offer much guidance for writers to submit to Tyndale and elsewhere.

Screenplay Writing: Zena Dell Lowe, Writer, Actor, Director, and Producer. Zena has much experience in writing for the movies, has done several movies herself, worked as a director for ACT ONE, and has her own production company, Skirt Films, for which she seeks writers, especially women.

We will meet at the Lake Doniphan Conference Center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, about twenty miles north of the Kansas City area. This includes all meals, single or double-occupancy rooms with two double or two queen-size beds per room, plus a private bathroom and desk.  The conference center also has walking paths, a small lake, and other activities.

We will start at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and go through 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Each editor will establish their own routine with some group meetings (groups: maximum of 6-10 writers), and much one-on-one discussion. This will be worked out at the start and used throughout. Each editor will have the flexibility to change things as the writer’s needs become more apparent.
